Grounding Nefeli Papadimouli’s study of the body in relationship to space, “Milieu Mouvant I” and “Milieu Mouvant II” gather a series of 24 polaroid photographs each, arranged in rectangular grids. They document activations of the artist’s “Eventail” series, fan-shaped sculptures where scaled-up fans function as skin-like extensions of costumes worn by performers, at times concealing and sheltering the body, at others expanding its boundaries in bursts of spectacular deployment as in wings or feathers. From the perspective of the relationship between body and space, this inventory of activations is reminiscent of mimetic defense strategies in nature, using both transparency to disappear into a background and pompous display of color to provoke awe and fear.
