Taking the form of a performance video, Yalter’s 1979 video Shaman documents the artist as she enters a trance-like state through repetitive movement, accompanied by ritualistic music. The mask she is wearing, lent to her by her ethnologist friend Bernard Dupaigne, originates from a Central Asian Turkish tribe, and was collected in the 19th century by the Musée de l’Homme in Paris. The work is a testament to the pivotal role played by the figure of the shaman in Yalter’s work, reflecting her deep engagement with performance, ritual, and video. Her interest in shamanism can be understood through these artistic intersections as well as the broader influence of nomadic culture on her practice.
