The Yokohama Triennale, held in Yokohama, a large city adjacent to Tokyo, continues to stand out among Japan's many art festivals due to its large scale and over 20-year history. The 8th edition of this triennial event, directed by Liu Ding and Carol Yinghua Lu from Beijing, is titled Wild Grass: Our Lives, paying homage to the Chinese writer Lu Xun's book published in 1927. Given the myriad challenges we face today, such as war, climate change, economic inequality, and increasing intolerance resulting from unchecked capitalism, the directors prompt us to delve into Lu Xun's era, a century ago, in search of clues to the origins of these issues.
Curated by the artistic directors, the international exhibition will feature works by 94 artists from around the globe, displayed at various venues across the city, including the Yokohama Museum of Art. This international representation reflects the rich history and diversity of Yokohama. Furthermore, under the overarching theme of "Wild Grass," longstanding art institutions in the city will present diverse exhibitions and programs as part of the "ManyManyArt!" initiative. With the dual pillars of the international exhibition and the "ManyManyArt!" project, the 8th Yokohama Triennale aims to underscore the transformative power of art, emphasizing its ability to deeply impact our lives when it is both globally engaged and locally grounded.
